Venus Bay River Pole grant success

The Venus Bay Community Centre is thrilled that their grant application to South Gippsland Shire Council for the RIVER POLES project was successful! The application is to install 20 poles with graphic signage along the Tarwin River Venus Bay bike path and the signage will include information about local flora, fauna, cultural heritage, and river geomorphology.

The signs will replicate the style of the bird signage in Venus Bay.  The Venus Bay community value the natural environment – its coastal dunes, river and the native flora and fauna of the coastal peninsular. Providing information through graphic signage about native flora and fauna, geomorphic features and relevant indigenous and cultural information helps community members and visitors to understand and respect the shared environment.

Over the last year, the Venus Bay Community Centre undertook a placemaking project with the Jupiter Park mural project – painting the existing water tank with images of native birds of Venus Bay and installing graphic signage about the birds – this project has been very successful and has demonstrated an interest by the community to know more about their natural environment.

The bicycle pathway between Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay is a beloved asset by community members and visitors alike. It is being used even more frequently during the restrictions of COVID with people walking and riding the track daily. The Tarwin Landcare group community volunteers have been undertaking indigenous planting works along the track for the last couple of years – and the efforts are now shown with established trees/shrubs. The track also provides iconic and beautiful vistas of the Tarwin River at various locations along the track.

The new signage will link these aspects together.
