Our Rising Star.

The delightful, talented Kaylah Thomas, currently completing year 12 at Korumburra High School, is proudly one of our own home-grown, rising stars in the music and performing arts arena.

As a young child Kaylah loved to sing, but it wasn’t until her later years in primary school, music transformed into an irresistible passion she knew she wished to pursue.

Kaylah enthusiastically participated in primary and high school productions, relishing in the vocal and performing arts aspects. This encouraged her to become stronger and more confident within her blossoming craft. Kaylah also simultaneously turned to YouTube tutorials to acquaint herself with the piano before engaging in professional lessons.

The Korumburra Rotary Club was the first venue to welcome and enjoy Kaylah’s initial few public appearances, all well received.

Stepping courageously further out of her comfort zone, Kaylah’s progression involved performing at numerous, various local events, including South Gippsland Shire, Music With The People, and Carols By Candlelight at Coal Creek.

Kaylah even sang with the humble, well known Emmanuel Kelly, the amazing singer born into a war zone and abandoned by his mother in Iraq.  Understandably an inspirational highlight she fondly treasures.

The longing to sing and perform heightened and took front row seat for our lovely girl. She began auditioning for advertised productions in Melbourne and successfully won a place within Victorian State Schools Spectacular as a principle vocalist in 2018. This remarkable, annual, thrilling event is held at the Melbourne Arena and features each year on Channel 7.

Practice sessions were tiresome and time consuming around Kaylah’s education, however her devoted family drove her for eight months from Korumburra to Collingwood or North Melbourne on a weekly basis.

Kaylah thoroughly enjoyed being a Spec member. It opened her eyes and enabled her to grow as an individual as well as a performer; connecting with large audiences while learning to express her creative flare.

Auditions for Spec newly popped up in 2019 and Kaylah once again successfully jumped on board as a principle vocalist, this time securing a duet with a seasoned singer, who she now enjoys a mutual, special relationship with. Kaylah’s talents, musician skills and interaction with other artists continued to grow and improve during this exciting season.

It’s with no surprise, as I touched base with Kaylah, to hear her excitedly claim, “I’m so privileged to be a part of Spec for the third and last time this year. I already know I need to be flexible and open, adapting to new forms of learning due to covid-19 restrictions.”

Kaylah appreciates the Victorian State School Spectacular has allowed her to grow so much as a person, while gaining greater performing insight, confidence, and stage presence, not to mention the amazing people she has bonded with throughout this exceptional experience.

What does the future hold?

Kaylah says, “Now, completing VCE, the idea of life after school is quite daunting. However, one thing I know for sure is that I wish to pursue the study of music through tertiary education. There are several universities that offer music performance and composition courses, which largely interest me. Furthermore, I also have plans to release my first few singles sometime within the next 12 months. I want music to be a large part of my life. I want to not only enjoy it myself, but connect and write material that allows others to relate and enjoy music just as much as I do. “

We wish you luck, gorgeous Kaylah, and look forward to hearing more of you. Well done.
