Busking in South Gippsland requires a permit and has done for a number of years now. A Council spokesperson says permits ensure buskers have appropriate public liability insurance and they will not disrupt pedestrian traffic flow.

The cost for a busking permit has gradually increased over the years – in line with CPI increases.

2019/20 – $121.00
2018/19 – $118.00
2017/18 – $115.70

Because there was no specifically stated fee for busking, the above fee is simply the cost of a standard local laws permit. Concern was expressed from a number of community members that the cost for busking was prohibitive, which prompted the fee waiver.

The waiver is possible due to Council’s $2M Community Support Package which aims to help our region recover from COVID-19. Although fees are currently waived, interested community members will still need to apply for a permit because – as mentioned above – Council will still need to ensure that buskers have appropriate levels of public liability coverage and that the proposed location is suitable for live performance.

At this point in time, Council is currently not accepting busking applications until COVID Safe requirements are determined. We are currently working on this however, and hope to be able take applications again later this month with some additional COVID Safe criteria included.

So at this time, no fee charged but no application accepted either so no busking at all.
