Tarwin Lower Film Cinema

Calling all movie buffs to support precious South Gippsland history.

The Tarwin Lower Mechanics Institute Hall was built in 1890 and is believed to be the oldest building in the South Gippsland Shire. Nestled within the town overlooking the Tarwin River, the hall sits on crown land and is heritage listed by the shire. Unfortunately, however, the shire is not responsible for the historic building. Consequently, the town hall’s five-member volunteer committee applies for available state and federal grants to cover necessary, critical hall upgrades and maintenance. Grant applications are scarce and competitive; therefore, the committee is not always successful.

These managing volunteers are passionate about the Tarwin Lower hall and value its local historic and aesthetic ability to illustrate the early development of the town’s district. To continue its longstanding social community connectedness while generating a much-needed income, various events are facilitated, such as markets held five times a year in conjunction with public holidays.

Throughout its history the versatile, stately building has successfully accommodated such social interactions as dance classes, craft groups, art forums and exhibitions, popular Cafe Culture shows, concerts, Festival of Small Halls, and touring acts by the esteemed Woodfordia Folk Festival. The building is also typically utilised for electoral voting, town meetings and funerals.

The Mechanics Institute Hall seats 140 people or 200 standing. There are three separate areas of different dimensions available for hire by the community. If you are seeking a spacious venue to perhaps establish an indoor recreation, such as a table tennis or badminton club, or a scrapbooking/vision board group, the hall dynamics will impress and serve you well.

However, the current, exciting project on the horizon calls for passionate movie buffs, who are exhilarated by the thought of watching exclusive movies available to members from the Victorian and Australian Film Societies. Now is your opportunity to assist in progressing this concept.

Once the logistics are managed and the association established, picture yourself surrounded by nostalgia amongst fine company with a cuppa or glass in hand. Envision taking time out from your norm to be readily entertained by films of your choice shown on a sizable screen. The hall, now with the appropriate infrastructure, is an exceptional venue to host unconventional or classic movies to an enthusiastic audience.
