Open Letter To The CEO-South Gippsland Shire– Mountain Bike Tourism for South Gippsland Shire

The South Gippsland Action Group wish to make the case for the Shire to actually engage with Parks Victoria and the Mountain Bike riders to develop tracks within our Parks, State Forests and Reserves to develop a series of facilities that will encourage this tourism.  Many may not be aware that around the township of Derby, Tasmania, they have developed a network of tracks that has seen the tourist activity boom.  All that on the back of mountain bike riders coming from all over Australia.  Before the lockdown, Derby attracted some 30,000 visitors a year.

With Covid19 restricting travel around Australia, there is an opportunity to create some local tourism based on mountain bikes bringing an economic spin-off to many businesses in the Shire.
We have a few great locations to work with.  One is the Walkerville Coastal Reserve, stretching from Walkerville South all the way around to Waratah Bay.  That is an expanse of around 10km of Reserve.  If we also develop the path between Waratah Bay and Sandy Point, at the rear of the Coastal Reserve, we can add another 7km of trail.

The Reserve at Walkerville runs from an elevation of 160m at the west to sea level around the Bay.  This elevation difference is comparable to some of the rides at Derby.  The rides at Derby vary in length and difficulty and some would be comparable to what could be created locally.  The incredible features of Walkerville are the views that can be obtained over Waratah Bay toward Wilsons Prom.  This would be a great area for such a development as we have the caravan parks at Walkerville and Waratah Bay to support the activity along with many holiday homes.  This location is all within a two-hour drive for much of Melbourne.

If we were to work with Wellington Shire, we could also promote the West Alberton Forest Reserve, just to the north of Hedley and on the Shire border.  This forest reserve offers up similar terrain and another stretch of forest which spans over 8km from west to east.  In the north east of the Shire we have the forest reserves around Mirboo North and Darlimurla.  Trails in these areas can be supported by Leongatha and Mirboo North.

To achieve this, we have to have administrators prepared to commit funds into land under the control of Parks Victoria.  Surely, if we have a desire to create something for our Shire and the State, we can make it happen.

I have attached a plan which shows the Walkerville-Waratah Bay and Sandy Point reserve areas.
