A Paddock to Pub Journey for Local Produce

Early before sunrise in an area renowned as one of the most outstanding farming regions in the country, Barry Charlton from Berry’s Creek Cheese lights up his 600 square metre factory in Fish Creek. He then goes to work crafting hundreds of litres of milk into some of Australia’s most renowned cheeses. He selectively sources his cow and buffalo milk from a few selected farmers in the area and is the primary ingredient in his award-winning product – which he has collected hundreds of ribbons and trophies over his career as a local producer.

At the same time, not far from Fish Creek just North of Leongatha John Ellis of Bellvale Wines is tending to his vast vineyard in a location claimed to be one of the best Pinot-Noir producing regions in the country. This is reflected in the numerous national and international awards for his product said to be in the company of many producers of the Burgundy region in France.

The pair have come together as part of the Paddock to Pub series at the Fish Creek Hotel. Their produce is being showcased throughout January to be enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. An inviting Berry’s Creek cheese board paired with a 2017 Bellvale Quercus Pinot Noir is on offer and is a fine example of the amazing eating and drinking of the region.

Robert Crook, Front of House Manager at the Hotel says the demand for local food and drink is higher than ever and we’re in one of the luckiest parts of Australia in this regard. “The ongoing theme from our customers this season has been all about local,” He explained. “This initiative is to tell the stories of our wonderful producers in the area and the feedback has been tremendous.”

The Paddock to Pub series is running each month and showcasing local producers. Visit fishcreekhotel.com.au or the pub for more information.
