South Gippsland Shire Council has been successful with its grant application for $800,000 for the Great Southern Rail Trail extension between Korumburra and Nyora. The funding was announced today by Member for Eastern Victoria Jane Garrett MP under the Victorian Government’s 2020/21 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.
Rail Trail Funding Obtained from State Government.
This funding will help make construction of the 21.34-kilometre gravel rail trail between Korumburra and Nyora a reality. This is in addition to the $500,000 already received for the section from Leongatha to Korumburra and is another positive step toward transforming the Great Southern Rail Trail into one of the longest rail trails in Australia.
Council continues to work with Cardinia Shire Council and City of Casey to further extend the rail trail beyond Nyora and is hopeful the application submitted by Wellington Shire Council for the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program to extend the rail trail from Welshpool to Alberton is successful.
