Newscorp has announced the closure of around 100 of its regional print newspapers. These newspapers will now become digital only papers.
The executive chairman of News Corp Australasia, Michael Miller, said News was moving from “a network of news¬papers” to “Australia’s leading journalism network”. Currently we have 16 newspapers online, we will soon have 92.
372 journalists will remain to cover these regional newspapers needs.
The loss of advertising revenue has led to the events and seems to confirm the newspaper industry has permanently entered a new era. Thousands of jobs in the journalism industry have now disappeared. The new digital newspapers will use common content shared across their digital platforms so local news will be harder to locate.
None of these newspapers are in the Sought Gippsland area but we have lost the Great Southern Star which was founded in the 1800’s, and the Yarram Standard, leaving the Giles Family business just the Sentinel Times in their mastheads.
The other local newspaper, the Foster Mirror, appears to have survived and even increased its circulation during the closure of the three Giles Papers. Mirboo North has its own “boutique” newspaper also with a long history and fully staffed with volunteers. This paper is also fairing well and managing to print its paper inhouse.
The South Gippsland Communities support their local businesses so for now at least these two hardcopy newspapers look likely to continue.
Several of the staff from the now disbanded Great Southern Star have started an online newspaper called “the Paper” and are days away from launching their digital newspaper. From comments made on their Facebook page this group appear to be preparing a newspaper that supplies news to a wider audience than just the Bass Coast and South Gippsland area.
This newspaper also launched on May 1st after being in planning since late 2019 and set as a main goal to provide quality independent views on South Gippsland matters after many in the community thought fair and impartial needed to actually apply to news delivery for South Gippsland.
