The Victorian Government will release its reopening roadmap this Sunday, 6 September, providing certainty and clarity to communities and businesses alike.
The South Gippsland Shire is seriously lagging its neighbours. The outcome of this is fewer jobs and less income for the businesses in this Shire. It also means there is less population and hence less investment in our health services.
Corner Inlet Communities – the Shire released the Port Welshpool Marine Precinct Plan after spending thousands of dollars of ratepayer funds on consultant reports and have now shelved the plans.
A near miss on the Korumburra-Warragul Road after last week’s wind and storm. The massive tree appears to have missed the truck although a large branch did break off and land on the tray section.
The tree looks an awkward one to cut out without damaging the truck further. The owner probably got the day off work!
Only one person asked questions at the August 2020 Council Meeting. Penny Hamlet asked about the closure of the Franklin River Camping area.
Council Approved Phase II of the $2M budget allowance for a CSP which aims to deliver initiatives that provide opportunity to focus investment in targeted community support and stimulus activities specific to South Gippsland community and economy, in particular those who are most in need.
Two employment opportunities are presented at South Gippsland Shire Council. Both are described as newly created positions but a look at the organisational chart suggests that the directors roles have merely been renamed with the same department structure as earlier times.
All Council’s staff at Director/CEO level and the three Administrators all reside outside the Shire yet both job descriptions justifiably promote the positives of living the country lifestyle within easy reach of the city.
Work is progressing well on the Mirboo North pool redevelopment. Whilst the buildings have been progressing well and are looking close to finish stage, the winter saw a big hole, lots of heaps of clay and dirt and now the pool walls are rising from the ground ready to have the pool structure built. Much of the piles of dirt will of course be put back around the pool once it is constructed. Should be an awesome site in a few months time.
At last week’s Council meeting, Council approved a development plan overlay for land at 35 Warragul Road in the Residential Growth Area (North West Korumburra) (DPO8) provisions of the South Gippsland Planning Scheme. The DPO8 was applied at the same time that 3.83 ha of the land was rezoned to General Residential Zone (GRZ) by Amendment C96.
Finally South Gippsland has hit the magic zero cases on the 7 day moving average. Does this mean relax our guard? NO!

Speaking with some lovely elderly folk this week, I was reminded not all of us are living, or aspiring to live, in the digital world, preferring to hang onto familiar, comfortable ways.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Under the new Local Government Act, Council is required to develop a Community Vision plan. At present the Council has not acted upon this so it is holding up progress on other strategies such as the Coastal Strategy. This letter is a starting point for community discussion.

Monday 24th August saw the issue and distribution of South Gippsland Voices first hard-copy newspaper. Initially distributed in Leongatha, Korumburra, and Mirboo North the newspaper will compliment the current online newspaper website that has been in existence since May 1st this year.

When reading the article in the on-line newspaper. South Gippsland Voices, titled “Limited time to view Council agenda before Council meeting” (7 Aug 2020), I soon realized that what Council is quoted as saying didn’t add up.

At the 22 April 2020 Council Meeting, Council endorsed the COVID-19 Community Support Package (CSP) of up to $2M to support the South Gippsland Community and Businesses to remain Healthy, Connected and Innovative.
